  • Daruma Dolls

The most famous handicraft in Sendai is undoubtedly the 'Daruma' (tumbling doll). The Matsukawa Daruma doll is said to have been created in the 'warring states period,' which was approximately 180 years ago. The area around the face of the Daruma is colored ultramarine, which is said to represent the color of the sea. The doll's belly depicts a picture of a treasure ship and the god of wealth and consequently it became known for being a good luck charm instead of simply a toy. It is perfect for a souvenir as it comes in various sizes.
